Dad Stats

Here are some interesting stats about dads.

We found the following from the U.S. Census Bureau:

  • In 2006 the Census Bureau estimated there were 66.3 million fathers in the United States. Source: Census
  • They estimated there are 105,000 stay-at-home dads caring for 189,000 children under 15. Source: Census
  • Two million preschoolers receive the majority of their childcare from their fathers while their mothers work or from single dads. There are approximately 10 million preschoolers with working moms. Source: Census
  • There are 25.8 million fathers in marriages with children of their own under 18. Amongst these nearly 26 million dads:
  • 2-in-10 are raising three or more children under 18
  • 1-in10 are raising their own infants under 1 year of age
  • 1-in-8 of these fathers are under 30 years of age
  • 1-in-25 are over 55 years of age
  • 1-in-50 live in the home of a friend or relative
  • 6-in-10 have annual incomes over $50,000

  • Today over 2 million (1-in-6) fathers are single
  • In 1970 there were 393,000 single dads (1-in-10)
  • Among these single dads:
  • 10 percent are raising 3 or more children under 18
  • 45 percent are divorced
  • 34 never married
  • 17 percent are married with an absent spouse
  • 4 percent are widowed
  • 10 percent are raising infants under 1
  • 22 percent are under 30
  • 5 percent are over 55
  • 24 percent have annual income of over $50,000
